On July 25th the city of Santiago de Compostela Celebrates the Saint-James day (Dia de Santiago). Many events happen at this time in the city such as:
Special church services to honor the life and work of Saint James, including the swing of the Botafumeiro in the Cathedral of Santiago.
Exhibitions of art work by Galician artists
Street shows.
Concerts of modern and traditional music.
Traditional dance events
The 25th of July is a public holiday for the locals and it is very common to see the streets of Santiago at night even more crowded with people than they usually are.
Each year when July 25th is on Sunday, is declared the “Holy year”, and on the 25th, the Saint door of the cathedral that is generally closed with bricks/stones is opened for the pilgrims to access the cathedral that way.
