It was a tradition from the Camino de Santiago, placing sick and dying people at the cross roads, strategic point of the Camino. The reason? lots of travelers from all around the world were passing, some could know a cure to heal them.

Many good and very well known hospitals were located along the Camino de Santiago. Nowadays, they are luxury hotels, (Parador de los Reyes Catolicos o el Parador de Leon), pilgrims albergues, restaurants, private houses, universities,…. but long time ago were refugees for the sick pilgrims along the way. Keeping the health of the peregrinos was the main job of the monks and the nuns of these hospitals.
