The international pilgrimage route played a fundamental role in facilitating the interchange of cultural developments in Europe during the Middle Ages.

There are around 1,800 buildings along the route carrying a great historic interest. There is no comparable Christian pilgrimage route of such extent and continuity anywhere in Europe.
